Athens 2004
Olympic Games
Along
with my colleague Dr.
Beatriz Garcia, we were funded by the British |Academy
to conduct research in Athens. We had both followed the development
of the Games since 2000, having been in and out of Athens
since then for work in relation to the International Olympic
Academy.

London
2012 Bid
During the Games, Dr. Garcia and I met for lunch with
Cherie Blair, Tessa Jowell, Ric Birch, Nigel Short, at
the invitation of Jude Kelly, Director for Culture and
Education at London 2012 bid. The discussion was about
the value of culture and education in the Olympic Movement.
London
2012 seems genuinely committed to these aspects of the
Games, particularly acknowledging the role of Olympic
Truce.

The
Olympic Truce
The
Olympic Truce project has existed in its modern incarnation
since the IOC revived it in 1991. Since then, it has slowly
gained recognition though more work needs to be done.
During
the Olympics, we participated in a function about Olympic
Truce, which was attended by Prime Minister Tony Blair and
Cherie Blair, Prince Albert of Monacco, Queen Sofia of Spain,
Prime Minister of Greece, Juan Antonio Samaranch, and other
delegates who expressed their support for Truce.

Zappeion Press Centre
Athens 2004
The Zappeion
Press Centre was arranged by the muncipality of Athens to cater
for non-accredited media. It was the focus of our research during
the Olympics, where we tried to establish the effectiveness
and value of such a centre for the Olympic host city.

International
Olympic Academy Participants Association
Athens 2004
The IOAPA
was one of the few academic meetings to take place in Athens
during the Games. It was held at the VISA Olympics Reunion park,
which was an excellent venue. While there were a handful of
people we knew, there were also many new people. This IOAPA
goes on for nearly 40 years now and many people have passed
through the Academy.. |
