This
paper explores the ethical implications of human limits
in sport and calls for a reconsideration of ethical concepts
in anti-doping. In particular, the paper develops an ethical
view on sport in the context of the emerging science of
gene doping. This new technology is of critical importance
to some scientists in the approach to Athens 2004. It is
argued that genetic modification might be the only way forward
for elite sport to remain interesting, as we approach the
limits of human performance. This prospect need not be seen
as a threat to sporting values, but more a mechanism for
promoting excellence in competition and for making sport
safer, by utilising reliable technology to bring about safe
performance enhancements. Nevertheless, genetic modification
does raise fundamental ethical and philosophical issues
about what it means to be human that must first be addresses,
so as to ascertain the value of this technology.
